Parks & People Green Workforce Development Center

“Since 2008, Building Design+Construction has constructed demonstration buildings at the annual Greenbuild International Conference & Expo. These modular structures show how building products are actually used and installed in real buildings. Thousands of Greenbuild attendees have visited these structures.

The Parks & People Green Workforce Development Center will be constructed on Parks & People’s new campus — a 9-acre tract of parkland that was previously part of Druid Hill Park in Baltimore, MD, but separated during development efforts and left to ruin for more than four decades. Now, the site includes restored historic buildings, a LEED Platinum designed headquarters, open space that will soon feature teaching gardens and playspace, and the new Green Workforce Development Center. The new structure will be attached to one of the restored historic buildings, and house Parks & People’s youth college and career readiness program, BRANCHES. It will also serve as headquarters for the organization’s landscape services division where many BRANCHES program participants are eventually hired. The Green Workforce Development Center will be a critical piece of the new campus, providing capacity to strengthen and expand Parks & People’s programs and deepen impact in our key focus areas:

+ Revitalizing neighborhoods through hands on community cleaning and greening activities
+ Building public-private partnerships to sustain green spaces
+ Creating programs that allow children to learn, grow, and explore the natural environment

Parks & People’s new campus and buildings are intended to be public spaces, offering opportunities for rest, recreation, education and job opportunities in the underserved Mondawmin community. This neighborhood was the epicenter of the riots that broke out in Baltimore, but with this investment, is poised to be the epicenter of opportunity.

Parks & People Green Workforce Development Center is a 14×45-foot prefabricated modular facility designed to LEED standards. Set on a 9-acre site, it will be built with products donated by major manufacturers and exhibited at Greenbuild November 18-19, 2015.

Partners include the U.S. Green Building Council, the Parks & People Foundation, Modular Genius and Ziger/Snead Architects.”
